Thankful Thursday

I have something very important to be Thankful for today!  I received my final results from my OBGYN today.  Apparently my first test was correct and I do have a clotting disorder.  I have heterozygous Factor V Leiden.  I know you are probably wondering what in the world that is!  I know I was!!!!  It means I have a deficiency in Factor V meaning that I have an increased risk of developing blood clots than a normal person.  Only 3-5% of the population has this disorder and those with ancestors from Sweden have a 10% increase in the chance of developing the disorder.  Well, guess where my paternal Grandmother is from!

I'm not really sure how to explain this to you as I am trying to figure it out myself.  I do know that the concern is that it can cause small blood clots to enter the placenta or umbilical cord and cut off blood supply to the baby therefore cause a miscarriage.  I am at a peace to know what is wrong, however, I am worried about the treatment my dr has recommended.  He is wanting me to take 81 mg Aspirin daily once I get a positive pregnancy test.  From what I know from nursing (again, it is a HUGE handicap to have the knowledge that I have) it might would benefit me to begin now and then take an actual blood thinner during pregnancy.  I am really happy to have a cause for my miscarriages and a way to treat it, but on the other hand, I am really nervous and upset because I am not sure I am happy with the treatment.  If you have any experience with MTHFR or Factor V Leiden, please email me and tell me your story.

I did start cycle 13 today and what a great way to start it by receiving news we are ready to start trying again!  I just need to trust my doctor and continue to have HOPE AND FAITH that great things are coming my way!

Oh I'm so glad for you to know the reason--but I'm so sorry it's not an easy answer. I will pray you have a peace about treatment and going forward!

Hi-
I just came across your blog. Prayers for you for peace about your treatment.

We, too, went through the infertility process. Our daughter was born this past October, but those days of wondering and waiting are very difficult.

Sending prayers your way!

Wow, that is interesting. And you know that based on my job, I will begin researching this as well to see what all is said about it. It is truly a blessing that you have found out what is going on with your body and now hopefully will have successful treatment. Good luck, Amanda!

Hi, I ran across your blog from Kelly's Korner. I have MTHFR (double muted) and I also have PAI-1 (double muted). My husband and I had 3 miscarriages before we found this out. My treatment was 81 mg Aspirin, 1600mcg Folic Acid, Prenatal vit and Metanx. I did see a hematologist about my diagnosis, and was told unless I suffered more than 5 miscarriages there would be no chance of being put on Lovenox/Heparin. After being on all of these medicines we conceieved and had no complications whatsoever. Our precious miracle was born on October 23, 2008.
I don't know if you have been to a fertility specialist (I haven't read your complete blog yet) I would recommend seeing one though and even a hematologist before you conceive again. I know how horrible and devestating it is to loose mutliple pregnancies. If you have any questions or just want to talk about it let me know...as much as I have read up on these clotting disorders I feel like a walking encyclopedia!

I'm glad to see you've had a few folks reach out to share their stories with you. I pray cycle 13 turns out to be a lucky one for you!

I'm SO glad you got your diagnosis. You know my story and my diagnosis. I'm homozygous with MTHFR and my OB didn't want to put me on any blood thinners. I'm doing just the 81 mg of baby aspirin, 4 mg of folic acid, and my PNV. Thank GOD everything is working out with me and I know they will work out for you. If you ever need anything, you know where to reach me. GL to you this cycle and I'm always praying for you.

Hi Amanda, After 3 miscarriages, I received a diagnosis of Factor V Leiden. My doctor put me on the 81 mg of baby aspirin. He explained that it needed to be in my system before getting pregnant and would continue after getting pregnant. Once I have a positive pregnancy test, I will also take Prometrium to help stabilize my hormone levels. I am currently on Femara, since I do not ovulate regularly. So with prayer and God's blessings maybe we will have our much desired bundle of joy soon.
